[10] => Ventana Sur is a must on the agenda of international industry distributors and buyers. Organized by the National Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (INCAA) and the Marché du Film - Cannes Film Festival, it brings together film industry players to promote co-production, financing, and international distribution of Latin American content. Each year it receives 3,000 accredited participants, including more than 250 buyers and sellers from all continents and representatives of the most important international networks and platforms.
Primer Corte, a section promoting Latin American fiction feature films in their post-production stage, includes Films in Progress. This component grants greater visibility to the films in the event by exhibiting them through the market's video library. La Suprema by Felipe Holguín Caro, produced by María Teresa Gaviria of Cumbia Films, and Memento mori by Fernando López Cardona, produced by Juan Diego Villegas of Fidelio Films, were part of it. Both films were also part of Films Projects of the Bogotá Audiovisual Market - BAM in 2022 and 2017, respectively.
Malta by Natalia Santa, produced by Perro de monte's Kiran Fernandes, was included in Final Copy. This is a selection of six recently completed Latin American fiction feature films, unreleased, not premiered in or outside their production countries, and in search of sales agents, distributors, and international festival programmers, who Primer Corte curators invite.
In Blood Window, the section specializing in horror and fantasy films, two Colombian projects participated in Blood Window LAB. The two films were El secreto del mal by David Valencia and Juan Camilo Cuervo and Anómico by Andrés Beltrán Nossa (BAMMER 2015), produced by Marco Vélez Esquivia and Lynch Anima. The latter won the dossier development award for the project with the most potential in genre markets granted by APIMA (Association of Independent Audiovisual Media Producers).
Three Colombian feature film projects participated in the Pitching Sessions section of Animation!, a dedicated space for animation movies that gives producers from the region and professionals from the rest of the world the opportunity to connect with Latin America. The first film was Mi papá el camión by María Cristina Pérez and produced by Mauricio Cuervo and Pez Dorado Animaciones. Next was Teke uneka (No te entiendo) (Teke Uneka, I don't understand you), directed by Marcelo Dematei and produced by Piaggiodematei Wapisa (Argentina) and the Colombian company Hierroanimación. The third film was Chocó: la tierra y los monstruos (Chocó: the land and the monsters), directed by Estefanía Piñeres Duque and produced by Alejandro Zapata Munevar. These three projects previously received a Special Mention from MIFA / Annecy, which granted them accreditation while selecting them to be part of the pitch Animation! Focus @MIFA 2023.Chocó: la tierra y los monstruos also received the Ibero-American Animation League award, which covered the costs of participating in the Quirino Awards 2023 (Spain) and the Pixelatl Festival 2023 (Mexico).
Animation! also held Colombian producer Andrea Cataño Pulgarin as a special guest this year. Three projects were part of the call for entries in conjunction with Señal Pakapaka: Al y En by Matías Sinay, produced by Sebastian Escobar of Mero Studio; Emilia, directed and produced by Cristian Arcos of Mono Dorado Animation Studio; and León el camaleón (Leon the chameleon) by María Cristina López and Carolina Montes, produced by Maritza Rincón and Marcela Rincón, a co-production between Fosfenos Media (Colombia) and Guiqui Toqui Sas (Chile). The teams behind these films pitched to channel executives with the possibility of being incorporated into the Señal Pakapaka.
The co-productions Noviembre (Colombia, Mexico, France) by Tomás Corredor, produced by Burning; Maneki Neko, directed by Sarahi Echeverría; and La casa de la playa (Costa Rica, Colombia) by Kim Elizondo, produced by Bocha Cine SRL, were part of Proyecta. La casa de la playa received the Proyecta Award, which included 5,000 euros and an invitation for two representatives (director/screenwriter and producer) to the annual Fulgor Lab 2023 workshop. Proyecta was created by Ventana Sur, the Marché du Film, and the San Sebastian Festival in 2018 to promote co-productions in Latin America and Europe.
Two projects in the post-production stage participated in DocSur, a section for presenting Latin American documentary films and projects to reach sales agents, creative producers, aid funds, and international programmers. The first was El nombrador de plantas (The plant namer) by Simón Hernández Estrada, produced by Beatriz López and Liliana Andrade of the company La Popular, and the second, Partes de una casa (Parts of a house) by David Correa Franco, produced by Jaime Guerrero from Rara Colectivo Audiovisual.
Underdogs by María Camila Daza Jiménez was part of the Netflix - SoloSerieS Pitching Sessions in SoloSerieS, a marketplace bringing together the most outstanding series and micro series projects in Latin America.
El Principio del Film is an initiative created in 2020 to give a diverse regional selection of scripts a chance to access international markets. It helps producers and professionals from the rest of the world to directly connect with Latin American creativity. Edwin Restrepo's Madre (Mother) and Luis Merino's Okoro participated in this space. Madre won the award from Final Draft, the industry standard in screenwriting software.

[10] => The San Sebastian Film Festival (SSIFF) and Proimágenes Colombia have joined to implement a training project to strengthen the skills and knowledge in film creation of 40 students from the 8th, 9th, and 10th grades (ages 14 to 16).
In this hands-on learning process, a Colombian training team coaches the students to create two short films —one fiction and one documentary—. The team comprises filmmaker Patricia Ayala, sound designer Diana Martínez, photographer Helkin Rene Díaz, editor Carlos Cordero, and Ione Hernández, the festival's project coordinator, who is also a workshop instructor. Filming and editing equipment is also delivered and installed at the school as part of the process.
For Ione Hernández, from SSIFF, the project "has an impact on them (the students), in that it adds value to their life, their environment and their creation (...) suddenly school acquires a different meaning". Proimágenes Colombia director Claudia Triana adds: "for us, it is crucial to approach the school environment to understand how students, potential film creators, understand the world and want to describe it so that they can feel that film creation is a feasible path."
The project is part of Gipuzkoa Coopera, an initiative of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa (Basque Country) born from the new UN objectives about the need to involve developed societies in cooperation projects. In this initiative, the Provincial Council invites local institutions with global impact to write and implement projects that can turn them into cooperative models for society.
Since its creation in 2017, Gipuzkoa Coopera has worked with the San Sebastian Festival at Secondary School No. 37 in Mar del Plata (Argentina). Together, they have implemented workshops on script writing, filming, sound recording, and other subjects, benefiting more than 250 students. In 2022, they partnered with Proimágenes Colombia to bring this experience to Colombia to promote training and strengthen the Colombian film industry.
The process involves selecting a school to carry out the project and two weeks of training (one online and one in person) in direction, photography, and sound (2022); and editing (2023). The training follows a hands-on, experience-based approach that directs twenty students each year to create a short film. Current 8th-grade students will be able to complete the three-year training cycle. The Grancolombiano school already offers training in filmmaking as an elective course, which was decisive in the school selection process.

[10] => Echo 3, a 10-episode action thriller set in South America, was created by Academy Award winner Mark Boal (The Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty). It stars Luke Evans (Beauty and the Beast) and Michiel Huisman (Game of Thrones) alongside Jessica Ann Collins (Revolution). Filming took place in several Colombian locations, including Bogotá, Girardot, and Cartagena, between July 19, 2021, and February 25, 2022. Production company Keshet Studios employed more than 400 local people and worked with more than 100 companies in Colombia, including Dynamo, in charge of production services.
Based on the award-winning series When Heroes Fly, created by Omri Givon and inspired by the novel of the same name by Amir Gutfreund, Echo 3 follows Amber Chesborough (Collins), a brilliant young scientist who is the emotional heart of a small American family. When Amber goes missing along the Colombia-Venezuela border, her brother, Bambi (Evans), and her husband, Prince (Huisman) —two men with deep military experience and complicated pasts— struggle to find her in a layered personal drama set against the explosive backdrop of a secret war. The production also stars Argentina's Martina Gusman (Carancho) as Violetta, a top political columnist, alongside a cast that includes James Udom, Maria Del Rosario, Alejandro Furth, Bradley Whitford, and Colombia's Juan Pablo Raba (News of a kidnapping), among others.
Series creator and showrunner Mark Boal says that "this is a thriller of clandestine operations and a story of national intrigue, set in Colombia, a country I only know from afar and which I fell in love with immediately." Peter Traugott, president of the production company Keshet Studios, adds: "From the moment I first saw the original Israeli series When Heroes Fly, much of which was set and filmed in Colombia, we had hoped to film a U.S. adaptation here as well. Colombia's rich and diverse locations and the wealth of local talent were essential to bringing this production to life on screen. None of this could have happened without the help of the Colombian government and Proimágenes Colombia."
The project is a beneficiary of the Certificate of Audiovisual Investment (CINA), which offers a 35% tax refund on expenses made on audiovisual services in the country. The incentive allowed the production to receive 48 billion Colombian pesos. "Keshet Studios' Echo 3 is one of the largest projects to have applied for the CINA incentive. We are proud that Colombia has been part of such an important production that greatly benefits our country through investment in filming services and employment. Projects of this magnitude are vital to positioning our country as an international production destination. It also represents a recognition of our local talent and the beauty and diversity of the locations where the project was filmed," said Silvia Echeverri, director of the Colombia Film Commission.
Echo 3 is produced by Keshet Studios, the U.S. production arm of Keshet International. Mark Boal also acts as executive producer alongside Peter Traugott, Jason Horwitch, Omri Givon, Eitan Mansuri, Jonathan Doweck, Mark Sourian, Avi Nir, Alon Shtruzman, and Karni Ziv. Pablo Trapero directed four episodes, including the pilot, and served as executive producer. Boal, Claudia Llosa, and Jeffrey Nachmanoff also directed some series episodes.
Keshet Studios currently has more than a dozen projects in various stages of development or production, including limited and recurring series, short-form dramas, and feature films. Some of its recent productions include the second season of La Brea (NBC) and the first season of The Calling (Peacock) with David E Kelley —both were co-produced with Universal Television— and A Small Light (Nat Geo / Disney+), which will premiere in 2023.

Some of its recent productions include the second season of La Brea (NBC) and the first season of The Calling (Peacock) with David E Kelley —both were co-produced with Universal Television— and A Small Light (Nat Geo / Disney+), which will premiere in 2023.
