[10] => The San Sebastian International Film Festival (SSIFF), from September 22 to 30 this year, cements its position as the world's most significant Spanish-language film event. El otro hijo, marking Juan Sebastián Quebrada's debut feature film from Colombia, will compete in the New Directors section—an international competition showcasing first or second feature films by emerging filmmakers, that have not been previously released and were produced in the past year.
El otro hijo is produced by Evidencia Films, led by Franco Lolli, in co-production with Geko Films (France) and Le TiroCine (Argentina). The film has received support from two grants provided by the Fondo para el Desarrollo Cinematográfico - FDC (Production and Writing), with additional backing from Caracol Televisión and Dago García Producciones. In this movie, Federico and his brother Simón live life to the fullest during their adolescence until the tragic day when Simón falls to his death from a balcony at a party. As their family environment crumbles, Federico attempts to continue his school routine during the last weeks of the term. Unable to mourn, he grows closer to Laura, his late brother's girlfriend, who offers him some semblance of solace.
The Nest, a festival section exclusively dedicated to short films from film schools worldwide, represents the festival's commitment to nurturing future talent. This is where the industry showcases emerging global talents, including those who later become internationally recognized filmmakers. The section will also feature the world premiere of the documentary short film Pirsas, a Colombian production written and directed by Angélica María Torres Tamayo.
Offering an intimate perspective, the short film delves into the tragic events involving the Scouts No. 4 Pirsas group on March 18, 2006, in the Nevado del Ruiz region of Colombia. This incident resulted in the loss of 11 young lives, including the director's brother. Fast forward fifteen years, Angélica extends an invitation to her parents, urging them to retrace the very journey her brother took before his untimely passing. This poignant reunion serves as an opportunity to confront lingering questions and grapple with the profound void left by these multiple losses.
The film was brought to life through the collaborative efforts of Jaime E. Manrique and Angélica María Torres Tamayo, in conjunction with Guateque Cine, Black Velvet Laboratories, and Persona Cine. It originally emerged as one of the theses within the Master's Program in Cultural and Audiovisual Management at the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano de Bogotá. In 2021, the project was featured as part of the BFM Incubator at the Bogoshorts Film Market - BFM, a platform dedicated to fostering the co-production of Ibero-American short films within the framework of the Bogotá Short Film Festival.
In the same festival section, Kathy Mitrani, a Colombian filmmaker, will present Sombras nada más. This American short film is the outcome of her Master's in Screenwriting and Film Directing program at Columbia University in New York. The storyline revolves around Marisol, who, during the anniversary of her husband's passing, stumbles upon human remains at the neighbor's construction site. This eerie discovery terrifies Marisol, a superstitious visionary, prompting her to confront her own mortality.
Regarding the festival's Industry sections, two Colombian productions are participating in WIP Latam, a space that seeks to promote Latin American film production and support the completion of films in post-production. The first film featured is Mi bestia by Camila Beltrán, which received funding from the FDC in the 2019 Fiction Feature Film Production category. This project gained recognition at the Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum at San Sebastian in 2020, where it secured the ARTE Kino Award. It has also received support from the Normandy Region Writing Fund and the Brittany International Co-Development Fund in 2019. Additionally, it took part in the Moulin d'Andé Writing Residency (CECI) in 2018, Cannes Focus Copro 2021, and Eave Puentes 2021.
The story unfolds in Bogotá in 1996, amidst frequent power outages, as a rumor spreads that the Devil will arrive during an impending lunar eclipse. Panic grips the town, and Mila, in her adolescence, becomes deeply affected by this prophecy. Overwhelmed by the prevailing fear and influenced by the superstitions of her maid, Mila starts interpreting every life event as a potential omen. The world around her takes on an increasingly surreal quality, and Mila herself feels a profound transformation underway.
In the same section, we find Selva by Juan Miguel Gelacio and Esteban Hoyos García. The film revolves around a flock of flamingos that have recently appeared in the skies over Bogotá. Their origins are unknown, but it's evident they've lost their way. Julián, too, is lost in his own way. After spending five years working in a call center, his life has become a monotonous routine, and he feels utterly disconnected from the world around him.
A strange call at work sets off his sudden disappearance, leaving no trace behind. Selva captures Julian's final day in Bogotá, his encounters with those who matter most to him, and his journey into oblivion. The film was featured in the 17th edition of the International Producers Meeting (EIP), an event aimed at bolstering Latin American feature film projects in their early stages. This took place during the Cartagena de Indias International Film Festival (FICCI) in 2022.
The 2023 edition of the Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum will include the Colombian production Todo esto eran mangas (This used to be grasslands) by Daniela Abad. This forum aims to promote audiovisual project development, encourage collaboration among professionals, and enhance their access to new international markets.
The film is produced by La Selva Cine and Mirlanda Torres and is a recipient of the FDC grant in the screenwriting category for fiction feature films. It revolves around the story of Sofía and her mother, Lorena, who appear to be part of Medellín's affluent class in the 1990s. Sofia finds solace in the mall, the car, and her spacious home, cherishing the freedom her vehicle symbolizes. However, beneath this facade, they grapple with a crisis: Carlos, the father, has been absent for months, embarking on a business trip that never ended. His absence leaves them in a precarious situation, and without him, their world begins to crumble.
Lorena must navigate the challenges of managing the family's finances, a responsibility she has never shouldered before. Sofia, on the other hand, faces her repressed homosexuality in a puritanical society, all while bearing the burden of being the daughter of a mobster whose supposed business trip is, in reality, a prison sentence in the United States.

La Suprema, directed by Felipe Holguín Caro and produced by Tere Gaviria and Diana Pérez Mejía, is part of the Official Discovery Selection, where it competes for the People's Choice Award and the Platform Prize Award. The feature film tells the story of Laureana, an Afro-Colombian teenager living in La Suprema who dreams of becoming a boxer. Ryan is puzzled by how Jack funds his extravagant lifestyle and, despite himself, can't help but envy the opulence. After a disastrous turn of events, Ryan assumes his friend's identity, revealing the lengths Jack went to to maintain his dream lifestyle. The film features production design by Diana Trujillo and cinematography by Mateo Guzmán. It made its world premiere in the Official Selection of the 27th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival.
Paraíso blanco (Crazy Charlie), a Caracol Televisión series for ViX, directed by Camilo Villamizar and Juan Carlos Vásquez and produced by Amparo Gutiérrez and Darío Armando García “Dago”, made its premiere on July 20 on ViX+. The series, which benefits from CINA, is based on the life of Colombian drug trafficker Carlos Lehder and draws inspiration from Ron Chepesiuk's book Crazy Charlie. Set in the 70s and 80s, the show was filmed in New York, Miami, and Cartagena. It features Sebastián Osorio (El cartel de los sapos / The Snitch Cartel: Origins), alongside Polish actor Michal Malinowsky (Cómo casarse con un millonario / How to Marry a Millionaire), Camila Bordon (Chica vampiro / Vampire Girl), Andrés Castañeda (Un rabón con corazón / The Beauty and the Moody), Lina Tejeiro (Chichipatos / The Unremarkable Juanquini), and others.
Calle y Poché: sin etiquetas (Calle and Poché: no labels) is a docuseries directed by Natalia García and Liliana Moyano. The series follows the lives of Daniela Calle and María José Garzón, along with their close circle of friends. With nearly 40 million subscribers across their platforms, these influencers invite you to join them behind the screen on social networks, featuring a predominantly LGBTQ+ cast. This production, benefiting from CINA, made its debut on June 23rd on Prime Video.
Los iniciados (The Initiates), a thriller inspired by characters from the literary work of writer Mario Mendoza, is another original CINA production by Prime Video. It debuted on July 7, with subtitles available in 34 languages. This AG Studios production was written by Nicolás Serrano (Distrito salvaje / Wild District) and Esteban Orozco (Mala yerba / Bad Weed), directed by Juan Felipe Orozco (Saluda al diablo de mi parte / Greetings to the Devil), and produced by Rodrigo Guerrero (Jungle).
These productions join others that have benefited from Law 1556 and premiered in the first half of the year. The Colombia Film Fund (FFC) released Ambush on February 24 and Tomorrow Before After on April 13. CINA beneficiaries include La primera vez (Eva Lasting, February 15), El grito de las mariposas (The Cry of the Butterflies, March 8), La ley de la selva (The Law of the Jungle, March 15), the second season of Pálpito ("The Marked Heart," April 20), Perfil falso (Fake Profile, May 31), and Medellín (June 2).
Established through Decree 474 of 2020, the Audiovisual Investment Certificates - CINA, managed by Proimágenes Colombia and granted by the National Government, represent a tax discount equal to 35% of the expenses incurred by a foreign production company in the country for audiovisual and logistical services. This initiative aims to promote Colombia as a prime destination for audiovisual production. In 2023, the Ministry of Culture has allocated a maximum of 300 billion Colombian pesos (equivalent to US $73 million) for the issuance of these certificates.
Likewise, the quota allocated for compensation payments within the Colombia Film Fund - FFC for 2023 amounts to 9.15 billion pesos (US $2.3 million). When combined with the funds remaining from previous years, there is a total of 12,570 million pesos (US $3 million) available for compensation payments. In 2022, compensation payments totaling 7,991 million pesos (US $2 million) were approved for five new projects benefiting from the FFC.
For additional information on the incentives provided by Law 1556 of 2012 (Colombia Film Fund and Audiovisual Investment Certificates in Colombia), as well as access to the directory of audiovisual services and location resources, please visit www.locationcolombia.com.

[10] => États généraux du film documentaire is a non-competitive festival created in 1989 by Jean-Marie Barbe, the Bande à Lumière, and the Ardèche Images association. Its primary goal is facilitating interactions among film and audiovisual professionals and students while encouraging exchanges between directors and a public interested in documentary filmmaking. Since its inception, the festival has transformed the village of Lussas into a renowned place in the French film and audiovisual scene, earning it the name of "the village of cinema." The event is organized around three axes: seminars to contemplate documentary creation, professional meetings, and film programs that allow rediscovering works of authors, filmographies, or documentary cinema.
The program delves into uncharted territories of documentary history, shedding light on countries or regions rarely explored before. The absence of competition fosters a holistic exploration of these cinematic treasures. Screenings take place in Lussas and its neighboring villages, often within the welcoming homes of local families. The festival is closely affiliated with the Maison du doc, an organization established in 1994 by its founders, providing filmmakers with a platform to deposit their works for exclusive access to others. Each year, around 1,000 films find their home within this repository.
In its 2023 edition, held from August 20 to 26, the festival initiated a profound reflection on the portrayal of justice in cinema, the filming of trials, and the use of imagery as evidence. A special section dedicated to the origins of documentary filmmaking in Colombia, thoughtfully curated by Federico Rossin and generously supported by the Colombian Film Heritage Foundation and the French Embassy in Colombia, was a highlight of the event. The organizers describe this as "a unique exploration of the cinematic landscape of Colombia, a country marked by a tumultuous history, alongside a showcase of works by Luis Ospina."
Certainly, here's the revised version with bold text for film titles:
Among the Colombian films featured in this selection were La langosta azul (The Blue Lobster), a collaborative effort by Álvaro Cepeda Samudio, Enrique Grau Araújo, Luis Vicens, and Gabriel García Márquez; Rapsodia en Bogotá (Rhapsody in Bogota) by Jose María Arzuaga; Monserrate by Carlos José Mayolo and Jorge Silva; Favor correrse atrás (Please Move to the Back) by Lisandro Duque; Al mal tiempo buena cara, o la ópera del mondongo (Bad Weather, Good Face; or The Mondongo Opera) by Luis Ernesto Arocha; Lluvia colombiana (Colombian Rain) by Lisandro Duque and Herminio Barrera; Diario de viaje (Journey Diary) by Sergio Cabrera; Asalto (Assault) and ¿Qué es la democracia? (What is Democracy?) by Carlos Álvarez; Camilo, el cura guerrillero by Francisco Norden; Planas, testimonio de un etnocidio (Planas, Testimony of an Ethnocide) and Nuestra voz de tierra¸ memoria y futuro(Our Voice of the Earth, Memory, and Future) by Marta Rodríguez and Jorge Silva; Oiga vea! (Hey, Look!), Cali: de película (Cali: On Film), Asunción, and Agarrando pueblo (The Vampires of Poverty) by Luis Ospina and Carlos José Mayolo; and Ojo y vista, peligra la vida del artista (Eye and Sight, the Artist's Life in Danger), Nuestra película (Our Film), Todo comenzó por el fin (Everything Began at the End), El bombardeo de Washington (The Washington Bombing), and Un tigre de papel (A Paper Tiger) by Luis Ospina.
